Kenneth (Ken) Neal Sanders
June 27, 1946 - March 19, 2016
Kenneth (Ken) Neal Sanders died peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia, on March 19, 2016, after an extended illness. Ken was born in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, to Burley Paul and Atha (Odom) Sanders on June 27, 1946, and moved at the age of 18 months to Varnville. He graduated from Estill High School in 1965 and attended North Greenville Junior College (now University) where he majored in piano and organ. While a student there, Ken was the organist at First Baptist Church in Woodruff, South Carolina. He continued his studies in organ performance and church music at the University of Georgia and also served as organist at First Baptist Church of Elberton and organist/choir master at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Perry.
In 1969, Ken began working for Southern Bell Telephone, from which he retired in 2000 in Savannah. He remained busy in retirement, working as a service tech for the Oreck Clean Home Store and organist at Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church and St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. He retired from St. Andrew’s in 2016. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists.
Ken was preceded in death by his partner of thirty years, J. Randall Bacon; his parents; a sister, Ruth S. Jones and a brother, Burley Paul Sanders, Jr. He is survived by his partner John Johnson; a brother, Steve Sanders (Winn) of Estill, South Carolina, numerous nieces and nephews, several grand-nieces and one grand-nephew.
Service with full Eucharist will be held at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, 608 Hampton St., Savannah, Georgia, on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with graveside burial to follow in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.
